Set at the foot of the deep valley which stretches up till Ombretta Pass at the bottom of Marmolada di Penia southern pillar, the hut provides about 112 beds, and it is opened from June to September. It was built by D. u. Ö Alpenverein and inaugurated on 28 July 1897 with the name of “Contrinhaus”, and also “Nürnberger Hütte”. After the Italian bombings during the First World War, it was rebuilt by A.N.A. and inaugurated on 15 July 1923 with the name of “Casa degli Alpini in Val Contrin” (“Alpine House in Contrin Valley”). With the erection of the second body (“E. Reatto”) and of the small church (“To the Fallen of the Mountain”) — completed in 1930 — the whole set of buildings was familiarly called “Città degli Alpini” (“Alpine Town”). It is undergoing repair works at the moment. It is an overnight base for Via Alpina international tour.
